How to Work Aged Insurance Leads: The 45-90 to 181+ Playbook
Aged leads have a rough reputation, and a lot of the time it is earned. Buy a six-month-old list from the wrong place and you get people who already bought a policy, numbers that went dead months ago, and the same three names you were sold in April. That is not a problem with aged leads. That is a problem with nobody minding the inventory.
Aged leads are one of the most profitable things an agent can work — when the list is clean and you work it like a list instead of like a fresh lead. Here is how they work at GOAT Leads: what the age tiers mean, what a lead has to survive before it is allowed into the store, how to work each tier, and what we replace when one misses.
What “Aged” Means Here: Four Tiers
Every aged lead at GOAT sits in one of four age tiers, and the tier is the price. Older costs less, because older asks more of you:
- 45–90 days — recent enough that the person usually remembers filling out the form.
- 91–120 days — the interest is real, but they have had a season to sit on it.
- 121–180 days — genuine list work, and priced for it.
- 181+ days — the volume tier. Cheapest per lead, best worked as a database.
Those tiers run across our core lead types — final expense, IUL, veteran, mortgage protection, trucker, and health — at discounted per-lead pricing, and you pick the states you are licensed in. You can see live counts by tier in the aged lead store.
One detail worth knowing: the tier your order is written against stays fixed. A lead bought in the 45–90 tier is a 45–90 lead for pricing, reporting, and replacement purposes for the life of that order. The clock does not keep running against you after you have paid.
The Part Most Sellers Do Not Talk About
The aged lead store was the first piece of our own platform to go live, back in July 2025, and this is the reason it had to be software instead of spreadsheets. Before a single aged lead is allowed into the store, it has to clear more than a dozen automatic checks — every lead, every time, no human deciding whether to bother:
- Anyone on that contact already bought a policy. Not just the lead record — the contact. If the phone number or the email address on a lead matches a person who has a sale recorded, that lead does not go in the store. This is the single biggest way agents get burned on aged leads elsewhere, and it is the check that is hardest to fake without a real database behind you.
- It is already assigned to another agent. Aged inventory is not resold out from under the agent working it.
- It was already replaced. A lead that came back through the replacement process does not quietly re-enter inventory as somebody else's fresh opportunity.
- It is on an exclusion list. Do-not-contact, opt-outs, and permanent exceptions are enforced on our side of the fence, not left to yours.
- The phone provably cannot receive a text. When we have current carrier evidence that a number cannot take a message, the lead comes out of sellable inventory. That check also heals itself: if a later message to that number goes through, the lead is eligible again.
- The person is an active agent on our own platform. Your business is not somebody else's lead.
- An agent sourced it themselves. Leads captured through an agent's own website or business card belong to that agent. They are never resold, never redistributed, never in the store.
- It is already in someone else's order. Pending orders hold their leads, so two agents cannot buy the same one.
Time is what creates every one of those states, which is exactly why hygiene matters more on aged leads than on real-time. A real-time lead is seconds old — there has been no time for anything to change. A 200-day-old lead has had 200 days to buy a policy, change a number, ask to be left alone, or already be worked by three other agents. Someone has to check. On our platform, that someone is the platform.
How to Work Each Tier
45–90 days: still a conversation
Work these closest to how you work fresh leads. Phone first, and open by referencing what they actually asked for — the request, the coverage type, roughly when. Every lead we deliver carries its original form data and timestamp, so you never have to open with the weakest line in insurance: “did you fill something out?” You know they did, and you know what it said.
91–120 days: give them a reason to talk today
Assume by now that they either spoke with someone and did not buy, or were never reached at all. Either way, the form is not the hook anymore — the reason to talk right now is. Rates, eligibility, what changed, what they still do not have in place. Plan on multiple touches across a couple of weeks and mix calls with texts rather than dialing the same number six times in one afternoon.
121–180 days: this is list work, so schedule it like list work
The mistake here is treating a few hundred aged leads like a queue you will “get to.” Block time daily, work the list in order, and let the cadence do the work. This is also the tier where a text-first approach and even direct mail start earning their keep: the interest is a season old, but the underlying need — final expense, a mortgage that still needs covering, a truck that still has a note on it — usually has not gone anywhere.
181+ days: a database, not a queue
Cheapest per lead, and the tier most agents misjudge, because they grade it on contact rate instead of on cost. Judge these on cost per real conversation and cost per application. The angle that works is not the original form, it is the annual-review or re-quote conversation. Load them, drip them, work the states you are licensed in, and let callbacks come to you.
One rule across all four tiers: compliance is not a vibe. Calling windows, do-not-contact, and consent evidence are enforced by our platform before a lead ever reaches you — and your own outreach needs to hold the same line. Any dialer or texting tool worth using should make that automatic, which is exactly how the AI Dialer and AI Texting coming to the GOAT CRM are built.
What We Replace on an Aged Order
Our replacement policy is deliberately specific, and it is the same document for every agent. Requests go in within 72 hours of your order being filled, and eligible reasons include:
- A disconnected phone number — our support team calls every request to verify it.
- A duplicate lead received within 60 days.
- A lead out of the geographic territory you ordered.
- A lead where the person is older than 85.
- And the aged-specific one: an aged lead that was already sold by an agent who purchased it from GOAT Leads.
We replace up to 20% of an order for eligible reasons. Unresponsive numbers and voicemails are not on that list, and that is on purpose — nobody can sell you a list where every person answers, and pretending otherwise is how lead prices quietly go up.
Aged Leads Are Not a Discount Bin
Priced right and cleaned properly, aged leads are how a lot of agents keep their pipeline full between real-time orders — and how newer agents get reps without burning their whole budget in a week. The difference between a great aged list and a terrible one is never the age. It is whether anybody checked what happened in the meantime.
We check. Every lead, every time, before it is ever offered to you.
